Expansion brewing at Curious Drinks27 October, 2015
An award-winning beer and cider brewer has launched a crowdfunding campaign to raise at least £1m to fund ambitious growth plans.
Curious Drinks, a subsidiary of market-leading English winemaker Chapel Down, will use the money raised to build a state-of-the-art brewery and visitor centre in the heart of Ashford.
The move follows strong demand for Curious Drinks’ premium lagers and ciders – with sales growing at around 40 per cent a year.
Legal advice for the initiative was provided by law firm Cripps, which last year advised Chapel Down when it became the first quoted company in the UK to use crowdfunding to reach investors, raising nearly €5million.
“It was a pleasure to work with the team at Chapel Down again and to support their ambitious plans for further growth and development,” said Cripps partner Salim Somjee. “This is another chapter in the exciting story of one of the UK’s most innovative brands.”
The brewery, expected to be fully operational by December 2016, will enable Curious Drinks to consolidate its brewing and bottling operations into a single site, bringing significant cost savings and enhancing margins. Chapel Down is in final negotiations to acquire a 1.7 acre site near Ashford International rail station.
Frazer Thompson, chief executive officer of Chapel Down and Curious Drinks, said:
“We were humbled by the overwhelming response to last year’s record-breaking Chapel Down crowdfund and hope to build an equally impassioned army of shareholders for Curious Drinks through this latest campaign.
“As we set out on this project we wanted to work with people who had the right expertise and shared our commitment to excellence. From our previous dealings with them, we knew we would be in good hands with Cripps.”
Investors will receive a number of attractive benefits, from free brewery tours and 25 per cent discounts on beer and cider to their names etched on brewery fermentation tanks and exclusive limited edition beers.
The crowdfunding campaign will be open until 29 February 2016. Full details can be found at www.curiousbrew.com and www.seedrs.com
