I am a legal director based in our London office with a dual practice in our personal tax and succession team and our charities sector team.

My role in the charities sector team is focussed on providing a broad range of strategic advice and support to trustee boards and senior management teams of charities of all shapes and sizes. These charities range from the simplest of grant making charities, to more complex service providing charities, educational institutions, and include Royal Charter charities and also charities operating internationally.  My approach is to focus on providing practical solutions to problems facing charities and trustee boards and to help leverage our in-depth knowledge and experience of charities and how they operate to support our charity clients in modernising their governance to ensure that they are continuing to comply with their legal duties and obligations as they evolve over time.

My work in the personal tax and succession team focuses on acting for predominantly UK-domiciled high net worth private clients. I advise them on all aspects of wealth planning including wills, probate, mental capacity, trusts and tax and their philanthropy (using the insights gained from my charities practice). I also act as trustee and executor for several key clients. My approach is to provide clients with clear, concise and practical advice to ensure that individuals, families and trustees plan their affairs and formulate tax efficient strategies to achieve their objectives and preserve wealth for future generations.

One of the most enjoyable aspects of my role is the sheer variety of the work that I am involved in – no two days are ever the same but the golden thread in all my work is creating long lasting relationships based on a deep understanding of my clients affairs and their specific circumstances.

Area of expertise:

  • advising on the full range of complex governance issues: from advice on creating new charities, merging existing charities, winding up charities, to making complex constitutional changes, establishing and managing connected parties (such as trading subsidiaries). Depending on the charity’s needs this advice extends to liaising with the Charity Commission as required, whether about a proposed transaction or decision or about more complex regulatory matters, enquiries and serious incident reporting. I can also providing consultancy support to charity trustee boards and senior management if they are taking a more direct role in engaging with the Charity Commission in that process.
  • advising trustees on detailed policy reviews, process improvements and on addressing defective decision making where this has been identified.
  • providing strategic advice on trustee succession, structuring, charity trading and related tax issues.
  • providing advice in relation to fundraising, donations and grant making.
  • providing advice relating to charity land, strategic land development, the management of historic land banks and permanent endowment and compliance with applicable restrictions on the disposal of charity land.
