Deck the halls with natural value: The year-end planning round-up

12 Dec 2025

In the bleak midwinter, we brought some festive planning joy to brighten the view of even the most serious-minded Grinch.

As the importance of natural assets plays an increasingly pivotal role in the planning system, local authorities, developers and landowners re-evaluate how land is used, valued and managed. This Places and Spaces session explores how nature can be positioned as an integral part of placemaking and an often complex part of decision-making. We also discuss how BNG may evolve over the next year following the government consultation in the summer and current proposals in the Planning and Infrastructure Bill.

Using the recent launch of Wates Wildscape as a case study, our panel, consisting of James Clewlow, Beth Gascoyne, Andrew Black, and Simon Kennedy, examined the rise of off-site habitat creation and what it meant for developers, landowners, and planners. We explored how planning strategy, legal frameworks, and long-term stewardship came together to deliver genuine environmental and economic value.
